Sports Physiotherapy

Sports physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physiotherapy focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries related to sports and physical activity. It helps athletes and active individuals recover from injuries like sprains, strains, and fractures, while also enhancing performance and mobility. Treatments include manual therapy, exercise prescription, and tailored rehabilitation programs.

Key Aspects of Sports Physiotherapy

  • Injury Prevention: Techniques to identify risks, improve flexibility, and strengthen muscles to prevent future issues.

  • Assessment & Diagnosis: Experts evaluate biomechanics, movement patterns, and joint mobility to find the root cause of pain.

  • Rehabilitation: Customized exercises and therapies designed to restore function, allowing a safe return to sport.

  • Performance Enhancement: Techniques to optimize athletic capability and improve movement efficiency.

Conditions Treated

  • Sports physiotherapists treat a variety of musculoskeletal issues, including ligament sprains, muscle tears, tendonitis, and overuse injuries.

  • They work with athletes of all levels, from professionals to everyday active individuals.

Pelvic Floor (Kegel)Exercises

Kegel exercises are specialized rehabilitative movements designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which provide essential support for the bladder and bowel. By repeatedly contracting and relaxing these targeted muscles, this therapy is highly effective for both men and women looking to improve bladder control and overall sexual function

Key Therapeutic Benefits

  • Incontinence Control: Effectively helps treat and manage bladder leaks, as well as the involuntary release of urine or gas.

  • Physical Health & Recovery: Crucial for supporting and rebuilding the pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy, childbirth, or abdominal surgery.

  • Enhanced Sexual Function: May help improve sexual wellness and performance in both men and women.

How to Perform Kegel Exercises

  • Locate the Correct Muscles: Identify the specific muscles used to stop the flow of urine or hold back gas. (Important note: Avoid making a habit of doing this while actually urinating to prevent urinary tract infections).

  • The Technique: Gently squeeze the pelvic floor muscles, holding the contraction for 3 to 10 seconds, and then relax for the exact same amount of time.

  • Maintain Consistency: For optimal results, aim for 3 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions per day. These can be conveniently performed at home or work while lying down, sitting, or standing.

Clinical Tips for Success

  • Incorporate “quick flicks”—short contractions lasting just 2 to 3 seconds—in addition to your standard longer holds.

  • Remember that consistency is key; noticeable results may take a few months of regular, daily practice.

  • If you have trouble locating the correct muscles, our expert physiotherapists are here to safely guide and teach you the proper technique during your consultation.
